It’s time to GET SOCIAL.

To Social Media Camp, that is.

I’m super excited to be speaking at Social Media Camp 2012 in Victoria, B.C., once again!

I’m honored to say that this is my third year in a row as a speaker at this prestigious Social Media Conference in Canada. For the past two years, I’ve been both a featured speaker and also a session speaker, and for 2012 I’ll be presenting a Power Session, which for my session, will be my version of a hybrid between a speaking engagement and an interactive session where you can ask me lots of questions.

This is the first speaking engagement on this topic, where I will not be holding back any secrets as to exactly which apps I use, as well as any tips, tricks and techniques. During my overflowing-with-content, action packed 60 minute session, you can ask me ‘almost’ anything to do with iPhone photography. (usually I hold a few cards close to my chest … but not this time … :)

What’s the biggest question that I get asked on a regular basis about iPhone Photography? (iPhoneography) “What app did you use? Which app is that?” I’ll answer those questions, AND explain why we need to find new questions to ask mobile photographers :)

Last year my session room was standing room only! Apparently for this year, there is limited space in the room for my Power Session, so please do arrive there early because I’m eager to have FUN, share my passion with you for this exciting medium of mobile photography, and to share tips, tricks and techniques to inspire and encourage you to take even more great photos.

Photography and art make for a more beautiful web. Nowadays, cell phone cameras and iPhones are ‘one of’ the fastest way to create art and post to web, blogs and social networks.

iPhone Art and Photography for Social Media Marketing

  1. My tool of choice, camera of choice will be the iPhone (any, from 3G to 4s) and apps
  2. AND >> This session is open to ALL Mobile Phone Photographers.
  3. You Don’t have to have an iPhone to join in! If you are interested in creating cool images, please join me :)
  4. Top secret : Some people have even attended my session without even owning a cell phone. Shhhh. Awesome! It’s all inclusive, and everybody is welcome. (plus, it will be FUN)
  5. My presentation is loaded with iPhoneography examples from beginning to end, it’s a visual display, with NO boring PowerPoint :)
  6. Get inspired, motivated and passionate about this exciting medium, to use it in your business (or for personal expression)
  7. As an ARTIST, I’m here to show you some techniques, that you can then apply to your own industry and images.

If There Isn’t Credit : Don’t Spread It

You wouldn’t think twice about walking into a retail store and stealing whatever you want and then saying that you created it? (unless you are a criminal or want to be one)

You wouldn’t think of walking into an art gallery and taking a piece of art off the wall, walking out the door and then proudly displaying it as your own, would you? (please say no)

I’m passionate about the arts, an advocate for artists, and the topic of intellectual copyright is about to get a lot HOTTER than it already is right now, and it is pretty HOT right now.

(p.s. When I say “arts” I mean art, photography, design, cartoons, images, graphics, writing, poetry, paintings, and any of the creative and expressive arts that we now use as marketing and sales tools online.)

What if you want an image that you see online?

  • Play safe. Ask permission. Get permission in writing. Pay for it. Feed an artist. Pay a Pro.
  • Read the T.O.S. (terms of service) as you may be able to use it, with some stipulations
  • Read and educate yourself on copyright law and creative commons and image licensing
  • On social networks, it’s simple. Before you click that “share” or “pin it” button, see if there is credit attached to the original content creator (artist/photographer) … if there isn’t and it’s still OK to share it and you want to … simply add it in. Re-pin and add credit, the full first and last name of the artist, and ideally, a link to their website. This is good karma, and keeps artists and photographers in business.
  • What if you don’t know who made it? Look it up. Find out. Be a research-aholic (like I am) … Google can be your friend to find out who the original creator of an image is. Or, ask on social networks. Ask a question in the comment threads, “who is the artist?” … or “who is the photographer?” … this enables you to add it into your post, and also wakes others up to be accountable in their image sharing as well.

Artists, Photographers, and Designers make for a more beautiful web. Can you imagine the internet filled with only text copy? (like it was in the olden days) … booooorrrinnngg.

Conscious and purposeful sharing of images online on social networks with credit to the original source gives credit where credit is due, and also is a reflection of you as a business owner. Make it a good one. Set an example for others. Do the right thing.
